An article by Nicholas Kristof on contraception and maternal mortality in Somalia:
“Here’s a Mother’s Day thought: there’s a way to save many of the world’s 350,000 women who die in childbirth each year. But it’s very controversial, for it’s called family planning…”
Troy Davis’ case is a striking example of the various injustices of the death penalty. The death penalty is cruel, ineffective, and all around barbaric. Troy’s case specifically points out the racism and classism involved. Not only does it take away the essential human right to life, but it has countless flaws. We have executed innocent people in this country, and according to the Supreme Court, it’s constitutional because they had a “fair” trial. I don’t care what the Supreme Court or the Constitution says, any form of execution is completely unacceptable.
STOP THE MATERNAL DEATH CLOCK.
Here’s some background on the issue we’ll be working on next month in our Mother’s Day action for maternal health!
Majid Tavakkoli is an Iranian student activist that was detained on December 7, 2009 for speaking at an anti-government student rally at Amir Kabir University of Technology in Tehran. This is a blatant violation of his right to freedom of expression. He has reportedly been beaten, and is now suffering from a respiratory condition that needs medical attention, which he is being denied. This is a photo from the Student Activist Training in Olympia that the club attended yesterday, calling for the unconditional release of Majid. “Azadi” means freedom.
